Tens of thousands of unmarried Swazi girls and women travel from their villages and gather at the Queen Mothers royal village in Ludzidzini each year to participate in the eight day Umhlanga or Reed Dance ceremony. After arriving at the Queen Mothers royal residence the women disperse the following night to surrounding areas and cut tall reeds. The night after they cut the reeds they bundle them together and bring them back to the Queen Mother to be used in repairing holes in the reed windscreen surrounding the royal village.

The Zulu are an African ethnic group whose members live mainly in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, which lies between the Indian Ocean to the east and the Drakensberg mountain range to the west. The Zulus are also the most popular tribe in Africa. There are numerous ceremonies that relate to an individual's stage in the domestic cycle and also are linked to ancestors. Royal ceremonies include the reed dance ceremony (umkhosi womhlanga), in which young women show pride in their womanhood (with an emphasis on virginity) by parading at the king's palace in view of thousands of cheerful onlookers. The king maintains the traditional privilege of choosing a wife from among those women. King Mswati III watch young virgins in traditional Reed dance ceremony at the stadium near the R...

http://ozoutback.com.au/ Arriving at Matsapha airport: some scenes from Swaziland as it was in 1973; the background singing is the "Bena Mpondo" choir singing "Sanibonani, nonkhe" (Hello, everybody) in "uMbholoho" style, that I recorded in a small hut in Mangwaneni, near Mbabane. The next scenes are taken in Mbabane, Swaziland's capital; the music in the background is made by a woman, cradling her baby, and playing the "sikhelekehle", a one-stringed musical bow with a gourd as a sound amplifier. It was recorded at her house in Mbabane. This is the beginning and the end of a longer film of celebrations in 1973; these are shown in separate movies. These scenes were recorded with an old 8 mm camera (without sound) in August and September 1973; sound was added later from tape recordings I had...
